Raku firing ceramics doesn't have to be very  complicated:
1. Obtain an old oil barrel. Cut of the top tomake a lid
2. Cover the inside with qvartsfilt (= very heat resistant)
3. Insert your busquit burned and glazed goods (NB use a special glaze for Raku). Heat the inside with gas util the glazes are  completely melted and looks like honey
4. Use a mask. don't breath in the fumes
5. Pick up your goods with a long thong
6. Cover them with hay or sawdust and put a lid on very very quickly
7. Once cooled down, scrubb well
(or 8: come and see us)

We had our very first workshop at laCultura in 2007. It was called ‘Contemporary Art for Art Educators,’ and included a workshop in Artists Books. The background was simple:

1.     Many art educators want to update their knowledge about contemporary art. There is seldom enough time for that

2.     Many art educators lack the time and opportunities to make art themselves.

3.     Many art educators work alone at their school or institution and don’t have many possibilities to discuss their field.

4.     Contemporary art writings focus mainly on the English speaking areas of the field.

The schedule for the week included

·      Workshop: artist’s book
·        Contemporary Art in the schools: why and how
·       The international art scene
·       Non-object oriented art
·       What is installations?
·       Spanish art today
·       Discussions, crits, lectures
·       A field trip to CAC in Malaga

Since then we have had 2-3 workshops a year. The groups are small, 5-8 people. And we try to hold the costs for participants down by providing opportunities to cook together, by choosing workshops that focus on easy available materials, reusing and recycling. Some people have come back 2-3 times. This summer the workshop will center on concrete as an art medium. And we have brought in guest teacher Judy Farrar.

This isn't new. But we think it is just as important to consider as before. And here it is with Spanish subtitles too.

Here is how it can work:
You have an idea for a small workshop /seminar you would like to arrange. It could be in creative writing, in visual art, cultural studies... any of those subjects/areas that corresponds to laCultura's aim to act to create forums for artists, writers and other cultural practitioners, and the general public. Contact us, tell us about yourself and what you'd like to do, and together we'll make it happen. As simple as that. In the past we have had several workshops of this kind. For example Britta Kleeberg had a textile workshop, Tom Sandqvist had a workshop/seminar week on the 'Holy Picture', which later resulted in the publshing of book in Swedish.  Cilla Adlercreutz have had courses in raku sveral times, Steven Dixon and Harri Monni have had a workshops in Painting and theory.
