About us - life is good
LaCultura came about after over two decades of work as art teachers, university lecturers, course developers, coordinators, advisors and artists - in U.S., Sweden and Spain. It is no coincidence that we are in Cútar, a white peaceful and genuine but unquestionably vigorous Moorish mountain village, established in the early middle ages. Southern Spain has a rich history. Centuries of respectful and unique collaboration between the various cultures and major religions have left deep traces in its art and way of life. Here one finds longstanding vibrant traditions, simultaneously with a strong commitment to contemporary art and expressions. This is where the north and south meet east and west .
Culture is also food and health. We are continually increasing our cooperation with local producers. In the borderlands between southern Europe and northern Africa, cuisine is based on seasonality and local production. Nowhere else in Europe can so many different fruits and vegetables grow. Muscat grapes, almonds, olives, oranges, mangos, avocados and more are cultivated on the surrounding slopes. Delicious, healthy food is always on the table, and no one escapes the generosity, warmth, music, the velvety nights, or the occasional misty, mystic clouds, that float between the mountains.
We organize courses and workshops. We welcome groups for mini-conferences. We tailor visits for history, art and culture enthusiasts, active retirees, teachers, and others in need of change of scenery, recreation, education and regeneration. We offer opportunities to try or to develop art and crafts, to participate in food production, in cultural exchange, music events, field trips and language courses.
The house is ancient. We have restored it with care, and decorated it with authenticity and local as well as international, traditional, indigenous folk aesthetics. We have kept as much as we could of its original design, retaining objects and features, uncovering hidden ones, but also added contemporary art and design. There is a small pool in the garden. Guests have a private guest kitchen, and access to the library, wi-fi and salon. We are very much integrated into the everyday life of the village, but also engaged in contemporary global society and cross-culturalism. Malaga is 20 km away as the crow flies. To the sea, it takes 25 minutes by car. Around the corner wait Granada and Alhambra, Cordova, Seville and Morocco. Summer nights are scented with jasmine, walls are spotted with geckos. The evenings are filled with the sound of crickets, the flattering of bats wings and occasional white owls. Sometimes you hear the dogs barking far down in the valley, while taking in the best view of celestial constellations this close to a southern European urban capital.
WELCOME
