meeting point Axarquia
Axarquia, Malaga, Andalusia ...
The first thing you may think of are the sun, cities and beaches, but just a few km inland from the coast you’ll find the beautiful fertile, rolling hills of vineyards, olive groves, almond trees and exotic tropical fruit while witnessing the dynamic mountain landscape. Half an hour from the sea, in the coastal mountains, is the Moorish village of Cútar. Although old-town Malaga is no further than 22 km away as the crow flies, the village breathes tranquility and peace, and the night sky is illuminated with a myriad of stars and constellations. Archeological findings indicate that Cútar’s first settlers were from the Neolithic Age, but nearby stone-age bones and artifacts have also been found, proving the theory that Homo sapiens and Neanderthal lived at the same time. The Iberians continued to inhabit the area, but later Phoenicians and Greeks also colonized the region. The Moors |
built a fortification on the top of the mountain with the same name as Cútar, and it was under that which the village grew. Some historians believe that the Battle of Axarquía in 1483, when the Christians were heavily defeated, took place near the village. The landscape of this historic border town between Africa and Europe is dramatic and captivating. Hiking and nature walks in varied terrain are alluring. Just around the corner await cultural excursions to the Alhambra, Granada, Cordova and Seville. In Axarquía there are also many historical and cultural monuments, Moorish villages. On the Mediterranean coast are nature reserves and cities with a wide range of cultural and art museums, university, theaters, music and other inspiring places and events. The ferry from Tarifa to Tangier in Morocco takes 45 min. Here in Axarquia North and South meet East and West. Some Good links |
